DIY Stucco Identification: A Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Determine if the stucco is traditional or synthetic
Identifying whether the stucco is conventional or synthetic is the first step in recognizing it. Cement, sand, and water are the main ingredients in conventional stucco, also referred to as cement stucco. In contrast, synthetic stucco is created using a mixture of acrylic polymers, water, and aggregates like sand, quartz and fiberglass.
Examine the texture and appearance of the surface to identify the type of stucco you have. When compared to traditional stucco, synthetic stucco often has a smoother, more uniform appearance. A foam insulation layer may also be present beneath the surface of synthetic stucco, which can be determined by knocking on it and listening for a hollow sound.
